Gardens at Alcatraz

I enjoyed learning about the gardening program prisoners back in the day at Alcatraz. And I’m glad that the current caretakers are continuing the tradition of beautification and protection of the tiny island

My challenge with these pictures was to combine the macro shots with a sense of location. Sometimes I shoot macro stuff just to show the detail of something. But this time I thought it was important to give a sense of the total environment.

And here’s one shot to show the scene as I was interpreting it.

Pensive at Alcatraz

Last year I took a trip out to San Francisco and visited Alcatraz. Yeah, yeah. I am just now getting around to editing and sorting them. It was worse when I shot film. Sometimes, I’d end up chucking the film out after a few years of not getting around to developing them. I couldn’t stand looking at my failure. :/

Back to Alcatraz. Here are shots of things that I would be staring at for the endless hours of my confinement. You know, if I didn’t get accepted into the gardening program and was super anti-social.

Yes, they had a gardening program. Subject of another post!

What is that red stain there?

This was the library. I bet you could sit there for hours and wonder why you screwed up so bad you ended up at Alcatraz.
