Hollywood Glamour (Lighting)

I love 1940s-1950s styling, especially in photography. I spent this afternoon playing with my strobes to achieve a “Hollywood Glamour” style of lighting. From what I have read, the key is to wash out the skin with light to take care of any flaws.

Almost needless to say: Easier said than done. What I ended up doing for the couch pictures was having a strobe right on me and an umbrella off to the side. I also set my camera to flash to balance out the light.

The only way the single strobe worked was when I was on the floor and had it over me. I still ended up using my on camera flash for those, though. Without it, the pictures were too noir.

I tried to do this set with just one strobe, but you can see the dark shadows under my eyes. No es bueno.

Same issue here when I had my kid pose for me. That’s when I went upstairs for the second light. The Hollywood Glamour lighting is supposed to be harsh, but this was just too much contrast for my taste.

A monster!
