Ocotillo flower.

I’m super-excited about this picture! Hey, I had to climb a mountain to get it. Plus, I had to balance precariously to get the right angle showing the land below. All this and avoid being stabbed by the spikey plant.

Tried to have an ocotillo in Austin once. It rotted from the moisture one especially wet spring. Wah.

  1. Thanks! Yes, I love those plants. The native population of the area, including the Big Bend park, used the thorny branches to make the rooftop on their adobe walled homes. They’d pack the top with mud for better protection. I wonder if they used gloves? If so, what did they make them out of? Maybe they had tough hands.
